Wallander (Firewall, MacCormick, 2008,UK)

Film Title: Black and yellow in film or the media industry and this is exactly what the title colours of this film was suggesting that there was quite a lot of danger and violence in this film. We can see that the film title shows what kind of a film it was because the first thing we see is two violent looking girls walking down a lonely path away from a car looking all bloodied up for a certain reason then we see a battered taxi driver left for dead and this is exactly what the title shadowed.

How The Setting Is Revealed: The setting is revealed firstly when the camera is in a helicopter panning over the scene, which at first was very beautiful but aso quite cold and dull looking at the same time. Then it goes directly over land. At this point the camera angles got lower and lower on till it was behind to girls that looked quite suspicious. The camera then goes back to the car and pans around an then inside it which the audience discovers there is a bloodied man inside, at this point the audience will start to become excited but also at the same time suspicious to what is going on and what is about to happen which gives us that ‘edge of your seat feeling’.

Costumes/Props: The props that we see in the opening sequence of this film is a taxi and then a series of cloths that the both girls was wearing which suggested a number of things that I am about to explain. Firstly the taxi obviously showed that the battered man inside was a taxi driver who intently was taking the corrupted girls somewhere before he was brutally attacked and left for dead. When the camera paned behind the girls we could see that one of the girls had red streaks of hair in which normally suggests a rebel city girl they was both wearing quite guffish cloths which also again suggests things like darkness and death, blood and also dull people. At the end of the sequence we see a bloodied knife showing that it was the girls that committed that violent act on the taxi driver.

Editing/Camerawork: The camera first goes into a very long shot, which shows the dull cold sea then into a very close up/ panning shot of the two girls walking away from the bloodied taxi driver and his car. There is quite a lot of close ups of the taxi drivers injury and bloodied car. I think this because the director tried to show what the girls was capable of and what they had done to this poor taxi driver.

How The Opening Sets Up A Story: the opening sets up the story to be a very bloody violent thriller movie. I say this because the first thing we see is this taxi driver in is car almost dead because he was brutally attacked by these crazy almost insane girls. The director made the girls seem quite angry and also I found that the girls seem to not care about what they have done suggesting to me that they had done something like this before. It would give the audience that feeling like they are murderers and this was just not a one off. Because of how the scene had started it also makes the audience think why has this happened and leaves them guessing and wanting the movie to go on so they can find out what is going on.

Sound/Favourite Shot: I think that my favourite shot of the opening sequence has to be the side on shot of the girl on the right with the red streaks is holding a bloodied knife. I say this because this made me think and wonder why she did such a thing and what her motives was. She looks like your typical teenage rebel girl but that shot shows her to be so much more than that; it opens up a whole range of identities that she could fulfil.

Genre: The genre of the movie is a thriller we can tell this because of all the blood and violent s we see in the opening sequence.

Brick Collage

This is my brick opening collage, the pictures that I have chosen for my collage are all important to the movie in one way or another and all do relate to the Genre of the movie and also what the characters repusnt, props and also the kind of camera shots that are being used in a movie like Brick.

Brick Anaylsis (Rian johnson, 2005,USA)

Film Title: Film titles should be very good but at the same time should give to much away, in fact it should keep you guessing so the Brick title I thought fit the stereotype of what a thriller film title should be. I say this because I have found that most titles that appear in thriller films are the same for example they will be big and bold white letters and they will be appearing over a dull black background suggesting that they are easy to read but also quite interesting but at the same time does not give to much away. This is what a thriller title sequence is meant to do so I think you wont be surprised if you see this quite a lot in thriller title sequences.

Setting/Location: The setting starts out with an establishing shot in a dirty wet ditch whilst he is kneeling down over Emily, which was laying face down In the water dead to the world. The location is very good because as a child you was always told never to go there because it is dangerous so it is quite ironic that a body of a teenager would be found in a location such as the one she has been found in by Brandon. As he kneels down he looks very upset with him self like he didn’t save her in time but unusually you don’t see to much emotion from him for example tears or anything dramatic he just looks quite calm but upset at the same time.

Costumes/Props: The first props we see in the movie are Emily’s bangles whilst she is laying in the dirty ditch and also a dirty sleeve of a white jumper. Now this does not seem very important at the time but when later on the movie changes to another scene we see Emily putting a letter in Brendon’s locker and you can see the same blue cheap bangles and this time the sleeve of her jumper is very clean and white which suggest that it is the same character that you saw was dead in the ditch but it also creates a thought in the audience head. And that thought is why is the girl that was found dead in the ditch putting a latter prier to her death in Brendon’s locker.

How The Opening Sets Up A Story: When the scene in Brick opens up it immediately gives the audience that edge of your seat feeling because of the way it is set out, which is of Emily laying dead in the ditch with Brandon kneeling over her clearly upset over the situation. By doing this the audience will be thinking why is this young girl dead and why is he there? Suggesting that the opening sequence has done what it is meant to do as a thriller movie. The props also gives us many clues over time because we then see Emily put something in Brandon’s locker with the subtitles saying days prier suggesting that they new each other and something was going on. This in addition will also make the audience wonder to them self what is going on and will make them want to watch on.

Genre: The Genre of the film is a thriller and we can instantly tell this by the way that the title is paned out and then we see what is happening in the ditch. But I must say that you are not able to tell that it is a thriller straight away you have to watch on for a few moments before you can tell what is going on and what kind of Genre it is.

Rian Jhonston (2005,UK)

Film Title: The film tiles are very unusual because of the way they are set out. Firstly they are very big and bold but at the same time very plain which is easy to read and understand for the viewers but this is understandable because the film was made in 1955. But the thing that is really odd about this film is that the tittles appear to go backwards in stead of forwards and I think this is really smart because it is odd and it makes the viewers think why is this happening and that is what a thriller is meant to do so straight away it is fitting its status as a thriller. Even though the text goes backwards when you first see it you will not realise this because it’s the first thing you see and it will first appear to be normal.

Setting/Location: The location is set in the middle of nowhere at first because the woman character is running but there in nothing behind or in front of her, which suggest that she is in the middle of nowhere. Even when she finally gets a lift from this stranger it would appear that they was driving for ages before they finally come across things with light that is normal to the viewers. The location that is set in adds to the scariness and terror of the audience because they would be thinking why is a woman running in the middle of nowhere with no shoes on and equally will make them think why is this happening and wonder what is going to happen next.

Costumes/Props: The first props we see is a car and it stay like this for quite a few minutes of the film and a woman in a rain jacket. This firstly suggest that there must be something wrong because you don’t normally se a woman with just a rain jacket on running down a lonely street adding to the eagerness of the audience to see what is going on. And secondly the car is the other prop and when the male actor pulls over after nearly crashing the first thing he says to the lady is ‘ you nearly wrecked my car’ this suggest that the car is quite important to this gentleman and may be a main prop throughout the film.

Editing/Camera Work: The first shot we see is a panning shot of the woman actor running with no shoes on and I think this is an excellent shot to use for the first shot because it straight away makes the audience think why is she running with no shoes on then immediately goes into a very close up and then we see the characters face that shoes us that she is a really terrified about something which makes the audience wonder what that might be.

Titles/Font Style: The font and title style is very big and bold which I thought was quite boring until I saw the way it was showing which was backwards which then made me think the is quite unusual and thought out good by the director because you don’t see titles like this in much movies. This was quite surprising seen the movie was made in 1955.

How The Opening Sets Up A Story: The movie is started by a lonely woman running down an empty road that looks like a highway by her self so straight away it makes us wonder what is going on in the movie. The audience already know before they watched the film that is a thriller but if they didn’t by starting of the movie like this it would be easy for a person watching this film to figure out that the movie was a thriller, which I think is really good. The start of the film also ads to the stereotype of the woman because we will know that most woman in a thriller would be victimised and so when we see her running by her self terrified of something this again adds to her stereotype of a scared and lonely woman in a film like this.

Genre: The genre of the film is a thriller and we can tell this by a number of things for example the text and titles in the film and the heavy breathing of the woman that we could clearly hear at the beginning of the movie. We can also tell this is a thriller because at the start of the movie a woman is running alone in a dark and lonely place which fits the type of film that we are watching which is a thriller.

Analysis of 'Kiss me deadly' (Aldrich,1955,US)

This is my collage of (Kiss Me Deadly) it shows a series of pictures that show the type of movie it is which is a thriller. The pictures i have choosen are spisific to the film because they all show what the movie may be about and the may also be a good clue to what may happen in the latter part of the film.

Sixth Sense Analysis

Film Title: Film titles always give you a good view of what the movie may be about and the 6^th sense film title was no exception. I say this because firstly the title was set over a black background, which straight away gives the impression that, the film may be a horror or a thriller because of the way it is laid out. Second is the font of the text, when the film crew and characters where coming up the titles would appear very dull and small but then would start to get bigger, bolder and start to space out which gave the impression to me that the movie would be quite mysterious but at the same time enjoyable because that’s how the titles was set out to a certain extent. The music that was playing when the titles was coming up was quite scary but at the same time gave you that edge of your seat feeling and one part of the title that stood out for me was when the title (the sixth sense) came up immediately there was kind of a sharp but deadly sound that followed suggesting that this was going to be a very odd and creepy movie.

Setting/Location: The first location and setting I saw was in a whine attic/cellar, which straight away suggested to me that this movie was quite creepy. I say this because the room was quite dark and she was all by her self there and you could see by the look on her face that the character was quite terrified by the fact that she was down there all by her self. There was also one bit of that scene where she rubbed her arms suggesting that she was cold down there. The could be connected with the whine cellar because it could be said that you can associate cellars of any kind to be a cold and lonely place and I that’s the exact impression that scene gave me, that it was a cold and lonely place to be adding to the edge of your seat feeling a thriller movie is meant to give the audience

Costumes/Props: The props scene in the first scene, which was the cellar, was the woman and her colourful dress and also the whine, which was quite obvious seen as the scene in a whine cellar. The fact that the woman was wearing a quite bright dress was the stereotype of a female because even though the cellar was dark and really dull the character made the scene that much more scary because you would not find a woman dressed like that in a place like that normally. In my opening it added to her volubility in the scene and this was added by the fact that she was wearing heels and getting some whine to take to her husband.

Editing/Camera Work: There was a few shots in the scene but the one that stool out for me the most was the close up shots as their was quite a few of them as their was only three actors in the first scene. This creates the feeling that the couple was alone when in fact there was someone else in the house, I think that they used the cameras very well in the first scene.

Titles/Font Style: The title and font style was really simple but at the same time very effective. I say this because the font and texts and titles came on a black background and the text was blue, which could be seen as a thriller movie. The writing is also quite unusual as it starts of dull but then gets bigger and litter, which gives the impression those things, are not as they seem during the duration of the movie.

How The Opening Sets Up A Story: The movie straight away gets in to the genre that is given as a thriller because it starts of in a dark cold cellar with a lonely woman that the audience can tell is quite harmless and helpless. This makes us/the audience think why is it set in a place like this straight away, and even though nothing comes of it the audience will still be at the edge of their seats because they are straight away put on edge by what they have seen in the first few seconds of the film. Even though later on in the film we can tell she is with her husband before we no this it seems like she is alone but their might be something else in the room with her and we can tell she is quite scared by her facial futures and also the way she is acting in the room.

Genre: The Genre of the film is a thriller and we can instantly tell this by the way that the title is paned out and the music playing while the title is being shown over a black background. The first thing we see is a flashing light then a lonely woman in the cellar which shows that something may not be right because she gives the impression that she is scared of something or someone or maybe even she does not want to be down there by her self.

The Sixth Sense (1999, M. Night shyamalan, USA)

This is a collage of photos put together from the movie the 6^th sense I made demonstrating the type of movie it is. You can tell that the movie type would be a horror or thriller just by looking at the collection of pictures and this is really good because you can identify what you think the movie may be about. For example you have a range of pictures from a woman alone in a dark room of some sort possibly a whine attic to what looks like a unstable man in the couples bathroom with a gun so this automatically makes us wonder what is going on and why he is there. We can tell this is a thriller film because first of all the title, it is a dark background with a quite dull title coming up each times which gives the impression that the film is going to to be quite dark or scary and also in the sixth picture when can again tell this is a thriller just by the look on the characters faces for example the woman which is one of the three main actors In the scene is holding her face in horror and although you can not hair the music you could almost tell that it would be almost a dark scary tone to make the abundance be on the edge of their seat to see what was going to happen next.

Memento is not your average film because you can define it being a range of things for example strange, unusual but very exciting. You cannot identify it as a thriller from the beginning because it does not give of a feeling of suspense and edge of your seat feeling. The film's events unfold in two separate, alternating narratives — one in color, and the other in black and white. The black and white sections are told in chronological order, showing Leonard conversing with an anonymous phone caller in a motel room.

The type of music that is being playing played throughout the movie is quite thrilling but also dull and slow showing the type of movie that it is. It gives the feeling of suspense. The movie is all about 1 person and the music is almost identical to his personality throughout for example he is angry but sad at the same time and when the music is being played this makes us feel what he feels. I also feel that that the music shows tension within the film and this is good because there is always something going on in the movie as he is constantly finding new things but also things are also happening to him.

The movie shows a lot of close up scene as there is really only one main character I think this is good because the type of camera angles shown in the movie gives the impression that we are almost in his shoes.

Memento Opening Sequence

The opening sequence of Memento I thought was really good. I say this because it gives the impression of things in reverse, and this firstly makes you think (why is this happening) and also makes you want to watch on so that you can make sense of what is going on. The Character in the opening sequence is also hurt this yet again gives the impression that something is not right about the scene and makes you want to watch on. The music that is playing is quite soft but spooky so it makes you think very curiously. In the middle of the opening sequence we see that he has a gone and also a camera. This is not a normal process in a opening sequence so we can tell that the movie will be very adventurous but also at the same time exciting to watch.

The Ring Title Sequence

I think the ring title sequence is really fitting when it comes to the movie because by watching the sequence you can tell exactly what kind of genre it is and also what the story line could be. But at the same time it makes you guess what it is about and also makes you want to watch on to see what is going to happen next and that is what a title sequence should do. The music and the colour go exactly with what a horror is thought to be because of the dull colours for example blue and black. The music is almost quite spooky as it gives the impression that something is about to happen so it makes you get that edge of your seat feeling which is always a good thing when you are watching a title sequence.
